This is a historic-artistic monument containing remains of the various civilisations that have inhabited this natural harbour since the foundation of the Phocaean colony of Rhode, which, according to historical tradition, would be around the 8th C BC. Of particular interest are the vestiges of the Hellenistic quarter, the so-called Building A, the monastery and church of Santa Maria, and the remains of the medieval town wall, of which the original streets still survive. The entire archaeological complex is contained within the pentagonal-plan Renaissance fortification with five bastions, built to defend the town against enemy attacks.
The enclosure houses the Museum of the Citadel of Roses.
