Characteristics
There are three types of refuge: the hostel refuges, which are by the roads or paths and are open all year round; the attended refuges, which are the classic high-mountain or upland refuges and which may have an attendant during the season depending on the zone, though they are in any case fitted out for spending the night; and the free or bivouac refuges, which are always open and never attended – they are usually in out-of-the-way places and intended only for spending the night.
