Built in the 10th century, it is the greatest example of Romanesque art in the Girona regions. Almost since its foundation in the 10th century, the monastery increased in power until it dominated territories from one side to another of the Pyrenees. The church, the 12th century bell-tower and the defence tower from the same period are the most notable parts of this Romanesque jewel. In 1697, the monastery started to fall into decline; from this time onwards its influence decreased and the place was subject to successive plunderings, as a result of which pieces as valuable as the Sant Pere's Bible disappeared.

The Benedictine monastery of Sant Pere of Rodes houses the Study Centre of the same name. The architectural site has also been chosen as one of the headquarters of the Cap de Creus Natural Park. The majesty of the architecture and the beauty of its surroundings, from which it overlooks the entire peninsula of Cap de Creus, makes the place into an authentic delight for the senses.
