The Iberian settlement of Castell is situated on the Sa Cobertura promontory, on the eastern coast of Palamós, on an isthmus surrounded by water on three sides. Evidence has been unearthed of the existence of human settlements in this place since the 6th century BC. This archaeological site is set in one of the most stunning beauty spots on the Costa Brava.

The site occupied by the Citadel of Roses includes an archaeological site of just over 12 hectares and a museum that spans the town's 2500 years of history.

The first settlers were the Greeks, who were looking for a safe natural port in which to establish their trading activities. They were followed by the Romans and in the Middle Ages the town expanded under the auspices of the monastery of Santa Maria. In the modern period the walls were built and the square was increasingly used as a military facility in order to protect this strategic site. Following the last military occupation and the partial demolition of the site, it survived the danger posed by the urban development of the area and was declared a National Historic Monument in 1961.

Today it is a heritage centre open to the general public with a museum that opened in 2004 and an archaeological site where visitors can explore the history of the last few centuries in Catalonia.

This is the only known dolmen in the municipal district of Porqueres. The tumulus that originally covered the dolmen can still be observed today. All the slabs are made out of local sandstone. It is worth pointing out that some hunting and farming tools were discovered in this same place, indicating the existence of a settlement of a population of farmers and hunters in this area.

A large number of megalithic monuments have been discovered in the Gavarres mountain range, including the so-called Catalan galleries, kists and the corridor tombs, formed by long corridors that widen on reaching the burial chamber. One of the most important features in the area is the Daina cave, one of the most spectacular dolmens in Catalonia, situated in the municipality of Romanyà de la Selva. The Daina cave is a 7-metre-long Catalan Gallery formed by an entrance corridor leading to the burial chamber and a 10-metre-diameter circular tumulus.

Discovered in 1914 by Dr. Ignasi Melé, Els Ametllers Roman villa (1st century BC to 6th century AD) is one of the most important villas in the ancient province of Tarraco. Especially dedicated to cultivating vines and to the exportation of wine for general consumption, it is a classical example of farming in the Roman Mediterranean. Architecturally, it consists of two quite different areas: the urban part and the working part. Its situation, on the east slope of Can Magí hill, facing the sea and with a commanding view of the bay, conditioned the distribution of the building.

The urban part, the noble area of the complex, set on the upper floor, is evidence of the magnitude of the villa at all levels, particularly in the 2nd century AD. Features such as the magnificent thermal constructions, the mosaics, the stuccos, the winter dining room, the nymphaeum (fountain) or the swimming pool with the impressive sculptures in Carrara marble that are preserved in the Municipal Museum, show us the exceptional nature of the villa.

The working part, on the lower level, was the industrial area. It housed the storerooms and the rooms for processing the agricultural products. They made wine, oil, salted products as well as storing cereals.

The styles of bone, ivory, pottery, coins and buckles, which are on display in the Municipal Museum, are a true testimony of the everyday life of the villa.

These kinds of villas combined making the most of the territory – which in the case of Els Ametllers Villa covered a good part of what today is Tossa – perfectly with the luxury and conveniences of the owners. It should be stated that most of the structures that are preserved today are from the Augustine period (end of the 1st century BC – beginning of the 1st century AD).

Situated on the Costa Brava, this is one of the most important archaeological sites in Catalonia. It was occupied by the ancient Greek city of Emporion and later the Roman city of Emporiae, serving as the gateway for the arrival of these classical cultures on the Iberian Peninsula. The remains preserved there provide a wonderful window on the past. Empúries is a hugely important site in our history given that it is where the Romanisation of the Iberian Peninsula began. In addition to the ruins of the Greek and Roman cities you can visit the permanent exhibition of the dedicated museum, one of the highlights of which is the famous Greek sculpture of the god Asclepius, the Asclepius of Empúries.

The settlement of Puig de Castellet, which dates back to the 3rd century BC, is situated 2 kilometres from the centre of Lloret de Mar in a strategic spot with a commanding view of the area from the Tordera estuary to the Lloret coastline. It is a small site of 650 m2 composed of six dwellings.

The settlement was fortified with a thick wall and defence towers to defend itself during the Punic Wars that ravaged the Mediterranean from 262 BC to 146 BC.

The fortified settlement of Ullastret is an important Iberian site situated on Sant Andreu mount, two kilometres from the town of the same name. This settlement dates back to the 7th century BC. During the existence of the settlement, the Iberians built a great walled enclosure and established their own culture in terms of both urban structure and funeral rites, along with the different social activities carried out there. The remains of this Iberian culture in Baix Empordà can be seen in the Archaeology Museum of Ullastret, located in the Iberian village itself.

Megalithic monument discovered and excavated in 1975. Dating back to the Final Neolithic, it was used as a burial site throughout the Bronze Age, until 700 BC. It is composed of a covered gallery burial chamber with a transverse slab at the end of the chamber. Inside it measures 4 metres long and 1.60 metres across. The archaeological excavations enabled the recovery of various human and animal remains, fragments of pottery and 29 stone necklace beads.

Located in Finestres at 760 metres above sea level, right next to the municipality of Sant Aniol de Finestres, the Iberian settlement of La Palomera is a barrier-type settlement, typical of the Iberian period, classified as such due to its clear defensive purpose. It is a place with natural defences in the form of scarps located to the north and east of the settlement, which at the time made it difficult to reach.

It was discovered by the archaeologist Francesc Riuró in 1965. The surviving dry stone structure is arranged in a square layout. It is composed of an external wall with a tower-like structure placed inside. Finds have included Iberian ceramics made by hand or on the lathe, several remains of Emporitan ceramics and fragments of amphorae of Iberian or Greco-Italic origin, and even a fragment of Punic origin. In 2007 the watchtower and the Iberian remains of the settlement were restored. Located nearby is the Lady of Garrotxa sculpture by the artist Picolivas, a homage to the eminent Girona archaeologist Miquel Oliva i Prat.

This settlement is the most remote in the area and promises to be the most important, especially from an urban planning standpoint. It is the largest settlement in Lloret, covering 5,700 m2. It is surrounded by defensive walls and towers.

Some streets have also been uncovered, along with dwellings and other buildings such as food storehouses dating back to the 3rd and 4th centuries BC. Fragments of imported Attic ceramics have been found there, providing a clear indication of Greek presence or influence in the area.

At the monumental site of Sant Sebastià de la

Guarda you will find a recently consolidated and

signposted Iberian settlement (6th to 1st centuries

BC), a 15th-century watchtower (Cultural

Asset of National Interest), an 18th-century

hermitage and inn and a 19th-century lighthouse.

Right at the top of a mountain with cliffs, at 100

metres above sea level, from where you can take

several excursions through the massif, following

the Mediterranean long-distance footpath.

We recommend climbing up to the watchtower,

which was a defence construction

to guard the coastal area and protect it from

possible invasions by corsairs and pirates, which

still preserves many original features. Once at the

top, between the merlons that crown it, you will

be able to contemplate one of the most beautiful

views of the Costa Brava.

Situated in Banyoles, next to the lake, the so-called Parc de la Draga is one of the most important Palaeolithic and Neolithic sites in Catalonia. Successive excavations carried out in the area have led to discoveries relating to the agricultural activity of the period, such as some wooden tools that date back to 5000 BC. The material unearthed on the Parc de la Draga site is displayed in Banyoles Regional Archaeology Museum.

The Roc de la Melca prehistoric settlement is a huge block of Eocene fossiliferous sandstone,

underneath the edges of which there is a small shelter that was occupied by prehistoric man.

The Roc de la Melca prehistoric settlement was discovered by Francesc Riuró in the mid-1960s. The evidence found there related to its industry means that it can be dated to the Final Gravettian (around 18,950 BC).

Curiously, in the upper section some rills and circular hollows (50 cm across or larger) can be observed, a typical feature of Megalithic monuments and burial caves. It is thought that in the modern period the block may have been used as a quarry to extract millstones, and that the rills and hollows are evidence of this practice.

The Roman road of Capsacosta is an authentic engineering feat of great architectural interest, an exceptional piece of history from a hugely significant period for our country.

Built during the Roman Empire, the Roman Road of Capsacosta is easy to follow. Several stretches are in excellent condition. This road was called Via Annia and was a branch of the Via Augusta. From Figueres it entered the mountainous region and, after crossing the Bianya plain it climbed towards Capsacosta and continued on to the Ares pass before linking up with the Via Augusta again in Gaul.

The walls, kerbstones and other elements of the Roman road of Capsacosta show the extraordinary construction work carried out 2000 years ago.

One of the paths in the Itinerànnia network follows the Roman road of Capsacosta from the Traginers (muleteers) pass in the Bianya valley to Sant Pau de Segúries (Ripollès).

This Historic Monument of National Interest dates from the 1st - 4th centuries AD. The Roman thermal baths are considered very valuable for everything they represent and for being the best preserved remains of the old Aquae calidae, the present-day Caldes de Malavella.

Very high walls remain standing, while the entire operating mechanism is almost intact. They are an excellent example of thermal baths used for health purposes. Making the most of the town’s thermal waters, which spring forth at 60º C, the Romans constructed a building with a central pool and a series of surrounding rooms in which curative treatments were carried out.
