Micromundi, the only museum of its kind in Spain, displays a wide variety of MINIATURES, MINI-MINIATURES and MICRO-MINIATURES. A magical fantasy world in which you will find the art of the impossible.

Visit the museum and enter another realm of reality, on a different scale, a journey to the heart of imagination, beauty and technical precision.

You will find an exceptional set of works of art, taking you on a journey to different miniature worlds. The exhibits become smaller and smaller until you reach the collection of MICRO-MINIATURES, the world of the impossible. Admire works of art created as if by magic, such as a camel caravan in the eye of a needle, a jewel collection on top of an apple seed, and even the Eiffel tower on top of a poppy seed.

The museum is housed in a distinctive rationalist-style building next to the Romanesque church of Sant Pere. The museum has been conceived with a truly innovative and educational approach, in terms of the design and colouring of the various rooms and the exhibition resources themselves, particularly in respect of the design of the display cases, the lighting systems and the optical devices for observing the works.

The museum also has a multi-purpose room for temporary exhibitions related to the contents of the museum and for other cultural activities.

The building is located in a part of the city where constructions already existed in the 14th century. Few architectural elements from this early period remain: the 14th century well situated in the middle of the conservatory and the walls of the basements, dating from the 16th and 17th centuries.

There is documentary evidence from as far back as 1810 referring to the present-day building, composed of a ground floor with a courtyard and three upper floors. It was owned by the family of Ignasi Asols.

In 1868 the owner decided to divide it into two houses. The master builder Pere Pascual i Baguer was commissioned to carry out the works, who in addition to making the alterations constructed a new façade following the present-day alignment of the street, by means of which a surface area of 18 m2 was gained. As such, the present-day façade dates back to 1868. The new owners were Mr Francesc Daltavuit (number 48 today) and Mr Josep Roura (number 50 today). Later on, Josep Roura bought the building to the rear of his property and had it demolished in order to annex it to his dwelling in the form of a small garden.

Mr Josep Vilaret i Xatart purchased the two houses on 1st July 1897 in order to turn them once again into a single dwelling to reside in with his new wife, the pubilla (heir of the family property) of “Can Barris” in Palafrugell.

Mr and Mrs Vilaret were the owners of the electric company of Sant Feliu de Guíxols before it was purchased by Fecsa. They also owned cork forests.

It was Mr Vilaret who commissioned the ceiling decorations and paintings we see today, along with the spectacular porcelain stoneware mosaic floors that are still in perfect condition. New fireplaces were installed on the first and second floors, while the servants' quarters were on the third floor. Although this refurbishment unfortunately entailed the destruction of the old, small rooms on the main façade (decorated with period paintings), they were replaced by the wonderful rooms we see today with paintings on the ceiling and magnificent porcelain stoneware mosaics.

The conservatory and the stained-glass windows also date from this period. The modernist sgraffiti (pending restoration) constitute a noteworthy feature of one of the courtyards.

From this period onwards the house was popularly known as 'Can Vilaret'. It has been classified by the city council as an architectural heritage building.

At the end of 1998 Tomàs Pla (toy collector) came up with the idea of opening a toy museum in the house that he owns on Rambla Vidal, number 46. As the project began to take shape it became clear that despite having 4 floors the house was far too small for a museum and the idea was abandoned. However, at the end of 1999 the opportunity arose to purchase the building next door (number 48 and 50).

The early days of the year 2000 were decisive for reaching an agreement: on the one hand, with the descendants of Mr Vilaret; and, on the other hand, with the city council, which had classified the façade of the house as an architectural heritage element and had prohibited works from being carried out on the building in order to stop it from being demolished to make way for an apartment block. The negotiations were completed satisfactorily and the building was purchased by Mr Tomàs Pla with the goal of adapting it as a museum while carrying out the careful restoration of all its architectural elements.

On 11th August 2000 the Toy History Museum (Tomàs Pla collection) was officially opened at a ceremony presided over by the city's mayor and attended by 500 guests. An open day was held on 12th August, attracting over 2000 visitors.

So far, the extension project has been completed, along with the installation of two emergency stairways and the cafeteria (which can be accessed directly from Carrer de Sant Llorenç, 43). More rooms will be opened to the public in the near future: on the first floor, room number 3 and, on the second floor, room number 9 (the theatre) and rooms 13 and 14, both of which will house plastic toys. The third floor is for the offices. These rooms will be opened as and when the refurbishment works are completed.

This museum is the result of one family's devotion to its trade: making top quality biscuits. Since 1908 the work of the Trias family in the biscuit sector has generated a large number of objects and documents. This collection forms the basis of the TRIAS BISCUIT MUSEUM.
