The Land of Troubadours Festival in Castelló d’Empúries, which takes place on the second weekend of September, is the town's most important cultural and festive event. Through all sorts of fun and cultural activities, the townsfolk enthusiastically celebrate the town's mediaeval past and the golden age of the counts in the Middle Ages, when the capital of the county of Empúries was a land of troubadours and the counts of Empúries were the protectors and patrons of jesters and troubadours, or even the authors of lyrical compositions in the style, such as in the case of Count Ponç Hug IV (1277-1313) and, later on, Infante Pere I (1325-1342).
