A strategic and defensive historic site, surrounded by a city wall of which there are still some remains and one of the entrance gates. In its golden age, in the Middle Ages, it was capital of the region of Empúries and residence of the Counts of Empúries. Most of the streets still preserve their mediaeval structure. Other Gothic constructions from the same period are the Old Bridge, the Marketplace, the Curia-Prison and the Casa Gran or Manor House, most of which are found in the Puig Salner district. In the 17th century, the following convents were built: Sant Agustí, Sant Domènec and Santa Clara, in addition to the beautiful public washing place and the Torre dels Carlins.
