In the very heart of the Volcanic Area of the Garrotxa region is the old town of Santa Pau, an interesting historical town with strong mediaeval features. The old quarter of the town is delimited by the old city walls and was built around the castle and the main square, which date back to the 13th-14th centuries. The castle has a solid square structure and was the starting point for the town's urban layout. In addition, the town square, or Firal dels Bous, is a porticoed square with an irregular layout, with arches of different sizes and a decidedly mediaeval personality.
