Old Quarter of the town of Sant Feliu de Pallerols

The old quarter is the embryo of the present-day urban centre of Sant Feliu de Pallerols. There was a time when old quarters such as this one were completely neglected, tarnished and left to ruin. Fortunately, in many towns and cities there has since been a period of transition from neglect to protection. Local councils have seen the need to preserve them due to their historical, artistic, architectural and identity-related value.

Sant Feliu de Pallerols implemented its own initiative for the preservation of its old quarter in 1993 in the form of the Special Plan for the Protection and Improvement of the Historical Centre of Sant Feliu de Pallerols, with the goal of protecting, preserving and improving all the elements that make up this old quarter. It is a painstaking project explained in a book entitled Sequences: Historical Centre of Sant Feliu de Pallerols - Special Plan for Protection and Improvement, drawn up by the architects R. Aranda, C. and Pigemi R. Vilalta, a particularly interesting work since in addition to the protection rules for each building, it includes a fascinating study on the evolution of the town.

Generally speaking, what makes towns attractive from an artistic, tourism-related and cultural perspective are their old quarters, since they give them an originality and character that sets them apart from other towns, providing a degree of interest that depends on the extent to which their history has been reflected in buildings and their state of repair. Our old quarter tells us plenty about the mediaeval period and the importance of the town of Sant Feliu de Pallerols at this time, which is why it is the focus of this edition of the Hostolenc magazine.
