Monastery of Santa Maria in Ripoll
Founded in 880 by Count Wilfred the Hairy and championed by Abbot Oliba in the 11th century, the monastery of Ripoll gained enormous political, social and cultural power that made it a beacon in the process of forming Catalonia. The monastery of Santa Maria in Ripoll is an example of Romanesque architecture in the counties of Girona at its purerst. It currently preserves all the original features that remain standing: the main door, the cloister, the master walls and some apse chapels, as well as many of the counts' tombs, including those of Ramon Berenguer III and Wilfred the Hairy.
