Espai Carmen Thyssen
The Espai Carmen Thyssen is an arts centre devoted to temporary exhibitions. It was inaugurated in the summer of 2012 with the exhibition 'Landscapes of light, landscapes of dreams. From Gauguin to Delvaux.' The show was well received by the general public and critics alike and the gallery has become one of the leading art centres on the Costa Brava.
The Espai Carmen Thyssen Gallery is located on the second and third floors of the Abbot's Palace in the complex of the monastery of Sant Feliu de Guíxols, founded by the Benedictine order and with original features in the Romanesque style.
The second floor of the palace contains rooms 1,2 and 3 of the exhibition. This part of the building is where the living quarters of the monastery were located, along with the administrative area and secretary's office.
The Carmen Thyssen Space occupies 5 additional rooms (4-8) on the third floor of the abbatial residence. This floor has the feel of a stately home or manor house, enjoying wonderful natural light. It contained the living quarters of the abbot himself (chambers and study), along with a large reception area for visiting dignitaries, both ecclesiastical and political, a dining room and a guest room.
