Garotxa County Museum

Photo of Garotxa County Museum in Olot

The Garrotxa Museum is located in Olot city centre, in the late 18th-century neoclassical Hospice building. The exhibition rooms are devoted to the history of the county between the end of he 18th century and the mid-20th century. However, the most important section is the one devoted to the art of this period. The collection is largely made up of paintings of the so-called School of Olot, an important landscape movement in Catalonia, which includes painters such as Joaquim and Marian Vayreda and Josep Berga i Boix. The museum also houses works by several artists from outside the area, such as Enric Galwey, Joan Llimona, Joan Brull, Joaquim Mir or Ramon Casas, with his painting La Càrrega (The Charge). There are also many sculptures on display, with works by Ramon Amadeu, Josep Clarà, Miquel Blay or Leonci Quera, along with a wonderful collection of modernist posters created for the Cigarrillos París tobacco company.
