The Volcano Museum is the Natural Sciences section of Garrotxa Museum and is located within the Parc Nou complex, in the old Torre Castanys building.
The contents of the Volcano Museum's permanent exhibition focus on presenting the physical environment of Garrotxa, concentrating, on the one hand, on seismic and volcanic phenomena and, on the other hand, on the county's main ecosystems.
The objective of the first section of the visit is to understand the geological nature of the earth, the causes of earthquakes and volcanoes, and the main features of volcanism in the area.
The exhibition is complemented by an 8-minute audio-visual presentation on seismic and volcanic activity in the area, during which visitors can experience an earthquake simulation.
The wonderful Olot Natural Vegetation Botanical Garden, situated within the Parc Nou complex, is conceived as an additional section of the museum. Highlights of the garden are the English oak grove and the wide variety of plant species typical of humid oak groves. The oak grove features majestic 25-metre English oaks that are over 250 years old.
Visitors can find out about:
- Tectonic plates, volcanoes and earthquakes; the seismic activity of the region: seismograph and audio-visual presentation that includes an earthquake simulation; volcanism.
- The main ecosystems, with dioramas of the flora and fauna.
